Toscana, Bolgheri
Ude ved kystområdet i Toscana er et antal meget kvalitets-fokuserede producenter gemt lidt væk. Kystområdet i Toscana regionen inkluderer fra nord til syd, Costa degli Etruschi, Montescudaio, Bolgheri, Val di Cornia, Massa Marittima og Scansano. Sapaio er lokaliseret i Bolgheri.
Bolgheri ligger ved kysten 60 km fra Siena. Bolgheri var for få år siden forholdvis ukendt på den italienske vinhimmel, men solide investeringer, og en stærk fokusering på ikke italienske druer har gjort Bolgheri til innovations område. I Bolgheri satses på de klassiske Bordeaux varianter som Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot og Cabernet Franc. Sassicaia kommer fra Bolgheri og betragtes af mange som en af de bedste vine i Italien. Podere Sapaio's vinmarker ligger lige op ad Sassicaia's og Sapaio's anden-vin, Volpolo kom i den første vurdering fra Wine Spectator ind med 91 point, kun et point efter Sassicaia, der koster 5 - 6 gange så meget! Det bliver meget spændende, når Sapaio's første-vin, Sapaio bliver frigivet til April for første gang og bliver vurderet af Wine Spectator! :-) Gamberro Rosso vurderer dem desværre først til næste år for første gang, men alle forventer en topplacering!
Podere Sapaio blev for få år siden grundlagt af en succesrig og kapitalstærk møbeldesigner, Massimo, som opkøbte en gammel vingård, rev det meste ned og byggede den helt rigtige vingård op med restaureringen af vinstokke, beplantning af nye mm, - alt sammen med henblik på at kunne skabe DEN bedste vin. Dette blev så tilsat et par af de allerbedste vinkunstnere, - Carlo Ferrini og Gioa Cresti (teamet bag Casanova di Neri og mange flere) som fik helt frie hænder til at lave topvin uden skelen til omkostningerne i opstartsfasen. Det er nu lykkedes med allerede med anden-vinen, hvor man fornemmer Massimo's passion for det ypperste og en harmoni mellem druer, jordbund og menneskets formåen.
Podere Sapaio - A new interpreter of the Bolgheri area
The estate Podere Sapaio was founded in 1999. Its 40 hectars are spread between the Councils of Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona. Grape varieties of Bordeaux origin -Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot-, which in the last fifty years have imposed themselves in the area, are grown in lands of quaternary deposits. Other grape varieties are present in small quantities. There are also some hectars of land, which are part of the estate, where Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino cultivars of olive trees are grown.
The philosophy
Podere Sapaio has an experimental and innovational philosophy: it aims at searching new expressions of Bordeaux grape varieties in the Bolgheri area, with the final goal of producing wines which put together power, elegance and longevity.
The products
The two wines of the estate, Volpolo and Sapaio, are produced under the precious consultancy of Carlo Ferrini, enologist of international fame. Both such wines are a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and other grape varieties but, resulting from different selections of grapes, which are ripen in different vineyard, they interpret the characteristics of the year in two different ways. Sapaio, a Bolgheri DOC Superiore, before entering the market, requires 18 months of aging in barrique and 8-10 months of refining in the bottle. Volpolo mellows for 14 months in barrique and then, for the following 6 months, in the bottle. Volpolo first came out as IGT Toscana in 2003, and then, since the harvest 2004, it has been classed as Bolgheri Rosso DOC. The olive oil is produced according to the traditional methods of the area.
The communication
The names Sapaio e Volpolo derive from the names of two ancient Tuscan grape varieties. They have been chosen to emphasise, starting with their appellatives, the local features of the products. The crown, which is the logo of Podere Sapaio, pays homage to the nobility of the wine and the territory, a nobilty fully respected by the job carried out both in the vineyard and the cellar.
